Despite the economic downturn South Africa is experiencing thousands of Vodacom Durban July enthusiasts and socialites came to Greyville Racecourse on Saturday to spend, win and lose.
As usual South Africa's biggest racing event - with a reputation for great finery, excellent cuisine and flowing champagne - was a dazzling affair. The beautiful Durban weather permitted revellers to show off their designs.
Among the A-listers were Patrice Motsepe and his wife Precious, Uyanda Mbuli, Irvin Khoza, Bantu Holomisa, Malusi Gigaba, Siphiwe Nyande and Romeo and Basetsana Khumalo.
This year's event saw glamour in smaller hats and smaller dresses. Though a lot of people underplayed the seashore theme, there was a lot of colour.
It featured more wearable fashion and less theatrical clothes. While black remained popular, there was an abundance of cream and stripes.
According to top designer Gideon of Gideon Limited Edition people were unpredictable this year.
"The theme was great but people did not follow it," he said. "There was not as much blue as expected but they really made an effort."
Another fashion designer, Terrence Bray, who has attended the event for seven years, said it had "shifted from being a joke day to a fashion day".
"Most people went all out," he noted. "They made an effort. Many opted for comfortable clothes they can re-use."
As has become Durban July tradition, a few people sprinting naked down the racetrack after the event.
