The launch of the 46664 bangle project to immortalise the iconic Nelson Mandela attracted a host of local celebrities to Sandton last week.

Unveiled at Nelson Mandela Square, actor Tumisho Masha said the initiative was a good example of a "sustainable social investment".

The price of 46664 bangles ranges from R1995 for silver and R54948 for 18 carat gold to R67260 for 24 carat gold. A platinum bangle will cost R135660.

Soccer star Sean Bartlett, who bought bangles for himself and his wife, said it was "always good to back an initiative supported by former president Mandela because it makes a difference in people's lives".

Singer Danny K said because he received the bangle for free after his performance at the Nelson Mandela birthday concert in London, he decided to buy some for his girlfriend and parents.

"This is another way for me to show my support," he said. "We have the ability to change the world. With the 46664 bangle you know that you are helping to improve people's lives."

Guest speaker and Rivonia trialist Ahmed Kathrada said anything aimed at contributing to the fight against HIV-Aids needed to be supported.

The 46664 bangle initiative is aimed at providing funding for the 46664 wing of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which was established to fight the HIV-Aids pandemic and create jobs for infected and affected people.
