Vincent Tefo Malebo was just four years from joining the elite Club 100 when he died on June 28 at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital after a long illness.
Malebo was born on May 27 1912 in Teyateyaneng, Lesotho. He taught at St Peters Secondary School in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, from 1942 to 1956.
Among his colleagues were the legendary Zephania Mothopeng, Oliver Tambo and Eskia Mphahlele.
Some of his former students are Judge Fikile Bam, musician Hugh Masekela, Patricia Mokoena-Harvey, Chinki Modiga and politician Joe Mathews.
When St Peters was forced to closed down after the introduction of Bantu Education in 1956 he went to teach at Tlhokomelo Higher Primary. He joined the teaching staff at Meadowlands High in 1957.
In 1962 he returned to his roots in Lesotho. There he taught at St Stephens High in Mohale's Hoek and later at Butha-Buthe High.
Malebo was a staunch Anglican Church member who worshipped for a long time at the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Orlando West, where he was a lay preacher.
He served as church counsellor, warden and interpreter during services. His passion for classical music was legendary. He was also an avid reader.
His late wife Mamoroesi was a well-known social worker in Soweto. The Malebos had four daughters, Moroesi, Mpho, Lineo and Tholoana, and nine grandchildren.
Malebo will be buried tomorrow. The service at the St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church in Rockville, Soweto, starts at 9am. The cortege then proceeds to the Braamfontein Crematorium.
