South African athletes who have been selected to represent the country at events in Africa and abroad will knuckle down to serious business in Pretoria tomorrow in their final preparations.

They will compete at the LC de Villiers Stadium at the University of Pretoria. The event, that starts at 2.30pm, will also be open to individual athletes.

Some of the athletes are preparing for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoczsz, Poland, from July 8 to 13.

University students are preparing for the defence of their title in the Federation of African University Sports (Fasu) Games in Kampala, Uganda, from July 6 to 16.

"The meeting on Thursday will provide good opposition to the national players who are preparing to do us proud in Uganda and Poland," Molatelo Malehopo, Athletics South Africa's acting general manager, said yesterday.

South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) said the students will compete in athletics, badminton, chess, football, volleyball, table tennis, judo and tennis.

"The Fasu Games emphasises the link between sport and education while preparing athletes for even bigger events like the World Student Games, All Africa Games and the Olympics. They are hosted under the banner of developing sport in Africa and promote fair play and sportsmanship," said Moses Mashishi, Sascoc's president.

Male athletes in Tshwane will compete in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin events.

Their female counterparts will be involved in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin.
