A group of young Zion Christian Church members cheated death at the weekend when the bakkie in which they were travelling overturned several times, injuring them all, one seriously.

The accident is said to have happened on the road between Levubu and Elim in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.

The group of boys, clad in the church's attire, was apparently coming from a church service in Louis Trichardt. They were on their way to Tshimbupfe village near Thohoyandou.

The boys' ages range from 10 to 16.

The bakkie they were travelling in is said to have overturned after a tyre burst.

The driver of the bakkie sustained slight injuries. He and the other injured were treated at Elim Hospital and later released.

Only one young boy remained in hospital because of the seriousness of his injuries.

The injured boy, whose age had not been determined by late yesterday, sustained injuries to his head and right hand.

Provincial department of health and social development spokesman Phuti Seloba said yesterday that the boy's condition was satisfactory.

"The matron in charge at the hospital confirms that the boy received treatment for wounds to his head and hand," Seloba said. "She also confirms that his condition was not very serious.

"We wish him a speedy recovery and are happy that there were no fatalities."

According to Levubu police spokesman Inspector Samson Makondelela, the accident happened when "the driver lost control of the vehicle, apparently after one of the tyres had burst".

"The vehicle rolled several times and landed on its roof.

"The passengers, with the exception of the one young boy, escaped with minor injuries."

Makondelela said they were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving against the driver.
