The National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) has called for an urgent investigation into claims of maladministration in the IFP-led municipality of Imbabazane in the uThukela district of KwaZulu-Natal.
Nadeco claims that the mayor and exco members hired a municipal manager without a proper mandate from the full council led by the municipal speaker, who also employed a person for the same position.
Mnambithi Nadeco councillor Themba Ndlovu said the appointment of two managers for the municipality was "improper and a waste of taxpayer's money".
"We also don't know what will happen to the acting municipal manager because he has not received a letter terminating his service.
"We are calling for the MEC of local government, Mike Mabuyakhulu, and the provincial leadership of the IFP to intervene," Ndlovu said.
The IFP provincial leadership confirmed receiving a complaint about divisions in the council and the appointment of two people for the same position.
"We have sent a team to investigate the authenticity of these allegations," IFP provincial secretary Bonginkosi Buthelezi said.
He said that the matter was discussed at a meeting of the political oversight committee yesterday.
Buthelezi, who promised to make the report public, said the IFP would act if the allegations were proven to be true.
Mabuyakhulu's spokesman, Lennox Mabaso, said the MEC notes the latest development and views it in a serious light.
"We have now embarked on a process of establishing the facts about the allegations," Mabaso said.
"We do note that in terms of the applicable local government legislation, there is no provision for the appointment of two individuals in a position that should be occupied by one qualifying incumbent."
Should the allegations be found to be true, those responsible will be held accountable, Mabaso said.
