Daniel "Mampodi" Radebe, the founder of the Mampodi Community Challenge 15km Race, is confident that the event will grow bigger in Moletjie, Limpopo, following a good turnout on Saturday.

The race attracted more than 750 athletes. This is 50 more than those who started the race last year.

"I am highly impressed by the high standard displayed by these athletes.

"There is a lot of talent in this area which needs to be unearthed and nurtured," Radebe, told Sowetan yesterday.

"Through the assistance of the Transnet Foundation, backed by the Limpopo's department of sports, arts and culture, Puma and Energizer, we managed to give R1000 to the winners, R700 to the runners-up and R500 to third-placed runners."

Leburu Kgosiemang, of Transnet Athletics Club, won the senior men's category in 45 minutes, 34 seconds, followed by University of Limpopo student Phasha Magagane in 46,1 and local athlete Augustine Manamela came third in 47,32.

The senior women's category went to Emma Mahlangu in 65,16, followed by Itumeleng Molomo in 66,03 and Elizabeth Masebe in 68,11.

Eric Ledwaba, of Moletjie Athletics Club, won the veteran men's category in 54,20 and Ramatsi Sedumi was second in 56,41.

Diana Ralapa and Maria Kekana followed each other in 73,4 and 1:40,41 respectively in the women's veteran category.

The Sacco brothers - Robby and Jannie - came first and second in 61,53 and 67,31 respectively, followed by Frans Kekana in 71,24 in the masters' category.
