KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa is mourning the death of cultural expert and popular Ukhozi FM presenter Reggie Sipho ka-Isaiah Khumalo.

Khumalo died on Wednesday after a short illness. He began his career as a correspondent for Radio Zulu in Ulundi in the early 1980s.

Welcome "Bhodloza" Nzimande, Ukhozi FM station manager, said the passing away of Khumalo "has left a hole".

He described Khumalo as a legend who dedicated his life to uplifting his people.

"He ensured that people understood their culture. Even after he had retired, he could be heard on air reminding our people about the importance of culture. We will miss him. He also played a significant role by writing two volumes of a book called "Uphoko"that dealt with people's surnames and origins.

"He was a credit to the Zulu people and language," he said.

Zululand district Mayor Zanele Magwaza-Msibi expressed shock at the news of Khumalo's death.

"I was aware that he was not well, but did not expect this. As an expert on Zulu culture and a popular radio personality, he will be sorely missed," she said.
