Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic are among the four clubs who will compete in the inaugural Kimberley Cup in Galeshewe on July 27.

The other two sides invited by the Northern Cape provincial government are big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns and Premiership champions SuperSport United.

The provincial government is using this tournament as part of their efforts to promote tourism in the area ahead of the 2010 World Cup finals.

Northern Cape is the only province in South Africa that will not host a single 2009 Confederations Cup or World Cup match.

But their Free State neighbours have formed a partnership with them and Lesotho to assist with accommodation during the World Cup.

The Northern Cape provincial government is expected to release a full statement on the tournament and its objectives next week.

They organised a sports dinner in Kimberley last night that was to be addressed by MEC for sports and recreation, Fred Wyngaard.

l Stars have organised trials for their development teams at Bohlokong Stadium in Bethlehem today and tomorrow.

Rantsi Mokoena, Ea Lla Koto brand manager, said today's trials were for the under-17s and tomorrow's for under-19s.

"We have decided to beef up our development teams ahead of the start of the new soccer season. Our assistant coach, Sammy Troughton will be conducting the trials," Mokoena said.

They will start at noon today and 10am tomorrow.

Interested youngsters are urged to arrange their own transport and accommodation.

Mokoena said they were happy with the senior team's preparations for the new season under new coach, Ghanaian David Duncan.

Duncan will get an opportunity to see his new charges in a competitive match during the Phakisa Cup in Sasolburg on July 5.

Also participating in that tournament, organised by Free State MEC for sports and recreation Ace Magashule, are Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Celtic.
