Eskom tariff clash looms

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and other local authorities might be on a collision course with Finance Minister Trevor Manuel over the implementation of the additional increase in electricity tariffs approved by electricity regulator Nersa.

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and other local authorities might be on a collision course with Finance Minister Trevor Manuel over the implementation of the additional increase in electricity tariffs approved by electricity regulator Nersa.

Nersa approved an increase of 36,9percent for Eskom, whicht will push electricity costs in the metro up by 30percent, an extra 17,5percent added to the 12,5percent that was included in the budget passed by Council.

The Metro is able to pass on only 30percent and not the full increase. That could mean that the additional 17,5percent will only be imposed from January 1 next year after the adjustment budget has been passed. - Herald
