Fight enthusiasts in the Eastern Cape will be spoilt for choice with a bumper weekend of action on their doorsteps.
It all begins tonight at the Orient Theatre in Emonti, East London, where Mamali Boxing Promotions will present an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) mini flyweight title fight.
Nkosinathi "Mabhere" Joyi bids for a second defence. This champion from Mdantsane will fight Mexican champion Sammy "Guty" Guiterrez.
Mabhere, 25, is the hammer- fisted boxer whose incredible power has left 13 of his 17 victims gasping for air. The former South African king who abdicated that throne, which he had defended six times, just after winning the IBO belt in 2006, blasted Filipino Gabriel Pumar in one round at the same popular venue last November.
That was Joyi's last fight.
He faces a dangerous opponent in Guiterrez, 22, a right-hander who confirmed his credibility as a fighter when he lost a split decision to Raul Garcia for the Mexican title last July. Garcia is an immensely talented fighter who outpointed Florante Condes for the IBF title two weeks ago.
Guiterrez has 22 wins (12 KOs) against two defeats. Joyi is in for a real test of character.
This clash will be broadcast live on Blow by Blow at 9.30pm.
Action continues on Sunday at the same popular venue where some careers took off while others ended.
Sensational Zolani Tete will do what comes naturally against Frances Miyeyusho. Tete will defend the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) flyweight belt for the second time.
This 20-year-old youngster, a younger version of American boxing legend Thomas "Hitman" Hearns, conducts himself like a seasoned fighter.
Tete gave a poetic performance against Xolani Ntese over 12 one-sided rounds to register lopsided margins of 120-110, 120-108 and 119-109 at the Orient Theatre in March. Tete is undefeated after nine wins, eight by knockout.
Miyeyusho, 28, is a former African Boxing Union junior bantamweight champion. This left-hander has 21 wins (10 KOs), six defeats and two draws.
Their fight will be promoted by Eyethu Boxing Promotions, and SuperSport has guaranteed a live broadcast from 2pm.
These super fights which will be staged by promoter S'Phatho Handi and Mzimase Mnguni, respectively, have forced the second leg of the Baby Champs, which was to take place at the Orient Theatre, to be postponed until next weekend.
