There is a disturbing tendency among most, if not all members of the technical team to over-stress the fact that they are focusing on the 2010 soccer spectacular and turning a blind eye to preparatory tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations. Carlos Parreira downplayed the importance of the Afcon and our performance there was woeful.
We could hardly qualify for that showpiece. Now the writing is already on the wall that our qualification for Angola 2010 will be through the eye of the needle.
Experienced players are being compromised in the name of building a youthful team for 2010. This approach has proved to be suicidal in more ways than one.
A phased in approach of youthful players blended with the more experienced can be workable.
I fail to understand why players such as Sibusiso Zuma, Siyabonga Nomvete, Matthew Booth, George Koumantarakis and Benedict Vilakazi are overlooked under the pretext that they are either old or inactive at their respective clubs. I refuse to be subdued by such a flimsy theory.
