There is a new "sheriff" in the town of Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal who is rounding up some of the most wanted suspects, some of whom had been on the run for more than six months.
Sergeant Sphamandla Thusi and his dog Tylon arrested 12 suspects in three days recently.
Thusi, 36, stationed at the dog unit, has been highly praised for his excellence in ensuring that society is safe by nabbing wanted criminals.
Thusi was also instrumental in solving the case of a family assassination in Arbor Park, where five thugs raped a 14-year-old girl and her mother in front of her husband and killed them - including an 18-month-old baby.
He tracked down some of the five thugs to Mpumalanga, after which they were sentenced to life in jail.
In the recent arrest, the local court issued warrants of arrest after the suspects failed to reappear in court while they out on bail for murder, rape, theft and robbery.
Police spokesman Shooz Magudulela said: "The sergeant worked tirelessly with his partner, Constable Hlengiwe Nxumalo, and arrested the suspects."
Thusi said his main weapon is dedication to his work.
"I am delighted with these successes and was assisted by my partner Constable Nxumalo." Thusi said.
