Sinqobile Day Care Centre was founded in September 2006 in Driezich Extension 9 by three youngsters. Mama Angel paid them a visit and drop off a gas stove, pots, crockery cutlery, basins and toys.
Trevor Mashiteng, Andrew Ntshangase, and Dumisani Macanda asked their mentor for help.
Oupa Sibeko was a community worker who deeply understood the problems of Driezich and is still involved in Sinqobile.
"We live across the highway and we could not help noticing how the children on this side were suffering because of poverty," said Mashiteng.
"We raised funds to put up a shack, which has expanded into a classroom that accommodates 44 children. We also have a sick room, a kitchen and a separate ablution block.
"At first we did not charge any fees, but we have been forced to ask parents for a R50 donation. Most parents are unemployed and cannot afford the R50.
"Some families live on one form of social grant or another and barely make it to month end," Mashiteng said.
Sinqobile is a registered National on People's Organisation (NPO) and is in the process of registering with the Department of Social Welfare. The three travel to Sebokeng and as far afield as Roodepoort to beg for funds for the centre. They even have staunch supporters who let them cook on their stoves and also donate food.
"We teach the children basics like their names and addresses, colours, shapes and the alphabet. Oupa and Dumisani are away on a week's training course. We will be able to offer the children more," said Mashiteng.
The creche is situated on someone else's yard, but there are plans to register it properly. There is a state-of-the-art clinic in Extension 9, the only sign that government knows of the area.
The centre still needs a waterproof structure, furniture, blankets, linen, curtains, desks or little tables, sponge mattresses and a big gas canister.
