Ekurhuleni mayor Duma Nkosi has told the provincial ANC that he wants to resign - but the party says he will stay in his position for now.
"The mayor of Ekurhuleni has made a request to the provincial executive committee (PEC) of the ANC to be released from his duties," provincial ANC spokesman Nkenke Kekana said yesterday.
"It is a request that will be considered by the PEC in due course. As far as we are concerned, he remains mayor of Ekurhuleni."
Nkosi recently angered the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) when he refused to accept a memorandum at the union's march. After that the union called on Premier Mbhazima Shilowa to remove him from office.
Kekana said the PEC would meet in about four weeks' time to discuss Nkosi's request. - Sapa
