The Phelophepa Health Care Train has won the United Nations Public Service Award (UNPSA) in the category of improving the delivery of services.

The announcement was made yesterday.

The awards ceremony is part of the celebrations for the United Nations Public Service Day, which celebrates the value and virtue of public service to the community.

"It highlights the contribution of public service in the development process, recognises the work of public servants, and encourages young people to pursue careers in the public sector," said ministry of public service and administration spokesman Lewis Rabkin.

He said the innovative "miracle train", called the Phelophepa has, since its inception in 1993 developed into a fully-fledged health care train.

Rabkin said the three-coach eye clinic boasts four additional clinics providing dental care, health care and a medicine clinic, basic health education and counselling services in remote areas.

"It caters mostly for the underdeveloped and underprivileged communities," he said.

Rabkin said Phelophepa delivers comprehensive, affordable and accessible health care to communities.
