Winning widow does the jackpot jive

A KwaZulu-Natal widow hid her lottery ticket under a carpet and thanked God after learning that she had won a jackpot of nearly R8million, lottery operator Gidani said yesterday.

A KwaZulu-Natal widow hid her lottery ticket under a carpet and thanked God after learning that she had won a jackpot of nearly R8million, lottery operator Gidani said yesterday.

"I just could not believe that I had won such a huge sum of money. I hid the ticket under the carpet. Although I was happy, I was also scared," the woman told a winner's adviser from Gidani.

The mother of two boys, who is in the medical profession and a regular churchgoer, said she immediately thanked God for "choosing me to win the jackpot", Gidani spokesman Thembi Tulwana said.

The woman, who spent R70 on a Lotto Quickpick ticket, became R7967908 richer in the June 14 draw.

She planned to renovate her house, buy a new car, donate some money to her church and invest the balance of her windfall "to give my sons a good start in life".

She had been playing Lotto regularly, spending about R300 a month. Her previous big win was R3500.

Tulwana said Gidani offered "emotional counselling" and financial advice sessions with independent advisers for major winners.

Tulwana said a total of R12376000 had not been claimed since Gidani took over from Uthingo in October last year.

"Three millionaires from Gauteng have not claimed their R1,4million, R1,1million and R1,5million," she said.

The three winners played in October, December and February this year.

Another R1,4million jackpot winner from North West had also not claimed an April win. Two winners from Western Cape have not claimed R3,5million and R1,8million prizes since May.

Another punter, from the Eastern Cape, had not claimed R1,35million since last week.

But other Lotto players are claiming their huge pickings.

"Two jackpot winners from Free State and Limpopo each claimed R13,5million in May and June respectively," Tulwana said.

In March three winners from KwaZulu-Natal, North West and Gauteng also claimed big prizes."

Last week another winner from KwaZulu-Natal claimed a R7,9million jackpot. - Sapa
