Police in Newcastle have warned members of the public to "stop making false claims of stolen vehicles".

Detectives in the northern KwaZulu-Natal town are being inundated with calls of stolen or hijacked vehicles.

However, subsequent police investigations show that the vehicles are either still with the owner, or in the possession of family or friends.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident and filed a stolen vehicle case two weeks ago.

"Upon further interrogation it was found that he was driving the vehicle and had lied that it was stolen.

"Police investigations continue," spokesman Shooz Magudulela said.
