DA lays criminal charges against Vavi

The DA has laid a criminal charge against Cosatu leader Zwelinzima Vavi yesterday. "I have today laid a charge of incitement to commit a crime against Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi at Cape Town Central Police Station, for echoing ANCYL president Julius Malema's 'kill for Zuma' remarks in Kempton Park on Saturday," said Sandra Botha.

"This follows a similar charge laid against Malema by the DA last week," she added.

Vavi echoed a statement by Malema, who has said the league's members were "prepared to kill for Zuma".

"Because [ANC president] Jacob Zuma is one of us, and he is one of our leaders, for him, we are prepared to lay our lives (sic) and to shoot and kill," Vavi said at the funeral of Popcru vice-president Pretty Shuping on Saturday.

On Wednesday, the SA Human Rights Commission gave Malema 14 days to retract the remarks he made at a Free State rally on Youth Day, when he said: "We are prepared to die for Zuma ... we are prepared to take up arms and kill for Zuma."

Said Botha: "Where Mr Vavi ... should have rebuked the league president for his reckless comments, he has instead opted to descend to his level." - Sapa
