Vincent Vuma laboured to a unanimous points win over a disgraceful Alvin Mahonisi last Friday night, seemingly content to go the full 12 rounds when there were opportunities to get the job done much quicker.
Vuma registered the fourth defence of the South African junior middleweight belt through a deserved 119-110, 118-111 and 118-110 scorecard.
But he failed to deliver on the promise he made last week that he would beat Mahonisi into submission. The challenger, who fought as if he had been forced to challenge his home boy from Limpopo, was there for the taking.
But Vuma, who was superior in all departments, fought a too cautious fight, preferring to do everything from a distance.
He showed some flashes of brilliance, especially in the ninth round, eliciting deafening cheers from about 200 fans at the Carousel casino in North West.
They expected fireworks but it was never to be.
Vuma bettered his CV to 25 wins against one defeat while Mahonisi suffered his fifth defeat against 15 victories.
This was his second failure to win the national belt. He suffered a points decision to junior welterweight king Sam Malinga in September 2005.
It remains a mystery how Mahonisi got rated at the top in the junior middleweight class because he had one fight only, a win over eight rounds against Lucas Mogane last February.
Meanwhile, trainer Nick Durandt gaped in disbelief when his charge, Ilunga Mokabu, was poleaxed in 29 seconds by Khayeni Hlungwane.
A cracking right to the jaw sent Mokabu down as if he had been shot and he hit the canvass badly with the back of his head. He was counted out on the mat.
Durandt and Mokabu both dashed back to the change room even before the official time of this stunning knockout was announced.
In the lightweight division Joseph Modise beat Hendry Ngubane on points over six rounds, while Kaizer Mabuza beat Ephraim Swandle on a TKO in round three.
Junior middleweight Michael van Heerden beat Kobus Motloding on points over six rounds.
