Some ANC members, including a Letaba municipal councillor, almost spent the weekend in jail - after staging a march against their new regional secretary in Mopani, Limpopo.

The councillor, Jeffrey "Manjaro" Senyolo, was arrested for "orchestrating an unlawful march" by about 500 ANC members from branches around Tzaneen against Thabitha Mohlala. They want her to resign.

Limpopo police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said police had warned marchers to disperse before they were arrested.

He said the marchers proceeded anyway, "chanting slogans and toyi-toying.

"We arrested eight of them and charged them with contravening the law against illegal gatherings and refusing to obey the order to disperse. They were later released on R500 bail each. They will appear in the Tzaneen magistrate's court on Monday (today)."

Spokesman for the disgruntled branches, Phetole Mampeule, said yesterday the protest was fuelled by the in-fighting during branch meetings in the region.

He said protesters wanted Mohlala, the regional secretary in Mopani, to resign.

"Mohlala is accused of masterminding the disruptions of the AGMs in Mopani during nominations. Our investigations show she was behind disruptions at the branches."

But Mohlala said she was innocent. "I know nothing about their claims and their march," she told Sowetan.

The ANC is due hold its provincial conference at the University of Venda next month.
