Nomhle Pretty Singonzo was not just a pretty face. She worked hard, fought for the rights of women and children and assisted anyone who needed help.
Born on September 10 1966 the mother of three sons and a daughter passed matric in 1984 at Vulamasango Secondary School.
She joined the police services in 1996. The following year she passed her National Diploma in Policing at Technikon SA.
She worked as a detective and was assigned unit commander. After attending many courses she was promoted to superintendent in De Aar in the Northern Cape.
In the early 1990s she joined Popcru and in 1997 was elected a shop steward at the Batho police station.
She did sterling work for the police union.
In 1999 she was appointed to the union's provincial leadership as gender coordinator. She was later elected provincial chairman of gender affairs in Free State.
In 2001 Singonzo was elected provincial chairman of Popcru in the Free State, becoming the first woman to chair at national level and the second woman in all Cosatu's affiliates in the Free State and Northern Cape regions.
Singonzo's legacy as a gender activist will live on because of the tremendous contribution she made to gender issues both as a union member and a police officer.
She represented the women of Cosatu in South Korea, the women of South Africa at the Southern Initiative against Globalisation and for Trade Unions Conference and was part of Popcru's provincial delegation to Sweden as a Project Six committee member.
In 2004 she was elected Popcru's second vice-president, a position she held until her death.
She was also studying for an LLB at Unisa.
Singonzo, who died on June 10, will be buried tomorrow in Kempton Park.
The service starts at 8am at the Hope Restoration Ministries Church.
