Robbers strike at hospital

Four armed men disguised as patients held up terrified hospital staff at gunpoint before opening a safe and fleeing with all the money.

Seven staff members at the Sunninghill Netcare Hospital in northern Johannesburg were still shocked and receiving counselling yesterday morning after the brazen armed robbery.

Sandton police spokesman Inspector Lee Ramdiyal said the four men, two of them armed, entered the hospital's administration section at about 7am pretending to be patients.

They then pointed firearms at the staff and ordered them to open the safe.

Ramdiyal said one suspect was apprehended by a security guard and police came to arrest him other suspects escaped in two cars, a black VW Polo and a white Mazda 323.

The men fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, cheques and cellphones taken from hospital staff.
