The population of Gauteng is continually increasing and at present stands at 10,5 million.
And despite thousands of people dying every year of HIV-Aids, the population of Gauteng is growing.
The reasons for the growing population is that Gauteng is seen by residents of other provinces as the "rich" province where people can get work.
More and better schools and hospital facilities also attract people from other provinces, as well as legal and illegal international immigrants.
The question should be asked whether it is possible for this geographically small province to maintain and feed everybody.
Gauteng has also experienced the most xenophobic attacks, for reasons that can be understood: People are fighting for work, grants, education, jobs and health.
The national government should assist the poorer provinces to provide better service delivery, to build schools and maintain hospitals in order to keep their population in their provinces.
The job-creation strategies of the poorer provinces should be improved.
The government should address these problems to avoid more xenophobic attacks in Gauteng.
