Four armed men fled with a large amount of cash after ambushing security guards at a Mpumalanga shopping complex yesterday.

The thugs also allegedly stole guns belonging to the guards.

The robbery in broad daylight at a KaNyamazane shopping complex left many shoppers paralysed with fear and sent others running for cover when a gun battle ensued between the thugs and guards.

The guards had just collected cash from a branch of First National Bank in the complex.

The police said three guards had parked their van in the parking lot.

A colleague was left behind.

His two colleagues went into the bank.

"The suspects waited for the guards," police spokesman Captain Phillip Fakude said. "When they returned the suspects ordered them to drop the cash boxes and their guns.

"The suspects then snatched the cash boxes and guns before getting away in a yellow Audi A4."

He said several shots were fired during the escape but no one was injured.

No one has been arrested and police investigations are continuing.
