The plight of young people affected by the lack of employment worldwide will be put in the spotlight at a four-day International Youth Crime Prevention Summit.

More than 500 delegates from all over the world will gather at Durban International Convention Centre to share their experiences.

The summit begins next Tuesday and ends on Saturday. South Africa's youth and local government departments will get the opportunity to draw on international experiences in the rehabilitation of young people who have been involved in crime.

The summit comes during the month when the nation pays tribute to the young people who died after an uprising on June 16 1976 to protest against apartheid laws and the use of Afrikaans in schools.

Department of Community Safety Liaison spokesman Nonkululeko Mbatha says the summit will create an opportunity to draw on the history of the "liberation youth".

It will encourage them to channel the same energy used to topple apartheid into the current fight against crime.

"Young people will network and share strategies used in various countries to fight crime," she said.

Provincial safety and liaison MEC Bheki Cele says the timing of the conference is very appropriate.

"The conference will be utilised to showcase the government's goals of best practices in collectively fighting crime," he said.
