Mpumalanga police are searching for a teenage boy who is on the run after allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl on Tuesday evening in Waterval Boven.

Provincial police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane told Sowetan yesterday that the little girl was on her way home after playing with friends when the youth attacked her at about 6pm.

Khoabane said: "The boy forcibly took the girl to an incomplete RDP house and raped her.

"Later that evening when her mother was giving her a bath, she noticed that the child was bleeding from her genitals."

The girl told her mother that a boy whom she knew very well had forced himself on her. Her mother told a neighbour and then laid charges against the boy at the local police station.

"We believe that the boy is on the run, but we hope to arrest him within 24 hours because he is known in the area," said Khoabane.
