About 35000 foreign nationals have left Gauteng for their home countries because of xenophobic violence, the government said yesterday.
"Most were from Mozambique and Zimbabwe," department of community safety spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzisaid.
Mulaudzi said about 6000 foreign nationals remained in Gauteng and had found refuge in temporary shelters.
"The attacks have stopped and things are back to normal," Mulaudzi said.

"We don't want anyone living as refugees," he said. "The plan is to ensure that they return to their communities. We have engaged community leaders and churches about the reasons that bring foreigners here."
