Charity begins at home goes the saying, and New York fashion designer Marc Bouwer, pictured, will do just that when he brings his collection to Sun International's Posi+ive Rocks ramp at Sun City tomorrow night.

Bouwer, who left South Africa a while ago, landed on a magic carpet that took him straight into the heart of Hollywood fashionistas.

Word has it that most celebs and glamour girls with a penchant for the finer things in life in that neck of the woods are walking tall in his stunning designs. Women who spend hours drooling over his designs in glossy magazines include Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Heidi Klum, Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey.

The fashion guru wields great influence in the fashion world internationally. His designs are worn by celebrities at Academy Awards, Country Music Awards and the Golden Globes.

After studying fashion design in South Africa, Johannesburg-born Bouwer won the South African Vogue Young Designer Award. He moved to New York and met legendary designer Roy Halston, who employed him and later encouraged him to venture out on his own.

Bouwer launched his ultra-glam couture line in 1990 with partner Paul Margolin. Since then, his innate sensibility, keen eye, and undeniable talent, have landed him on the pages of revered international fashion publications and into the hearts of the world's most-glamorous women. In addition to a roster of celebrated runway reviews and feature articles, Marc Bouwer Couture has graced the covers of Harper's Bazaar, Oprah, Cosmopolitan, Instyle, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Vibe Magazine among many more.

One of his most memorable fashion moments was when he presented a PETA-sponsored collection, completely free of animal products, at the 2002 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. He then brought couture-inspired sportswear to QVC with his line M by Marc Bouwer, which debuted on QVC in February 2005.

The Marc Bouwer Couture collection is cut and made by hand, one to two pieces at a time. Both his commissioned pieces and retail collections are handled in this same way. His designs are fluid, form fitting couture gowns, in luxurious fabrics; draped jersey, cashmere, silk, crepe and velvet with intricate beading and adornments. Bouwer has dubbed his designs "deceptively simple".

Throughout his career, Bouwer has worked with a dream list that drives the retail market and invigorates the viability of American couture. The Marc Bouwer Couture Collection is sold at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and high-end specialty stores. In 2006 he made his designs accessible through the Marc Bouwer Glamit! label, available at Callaghan here.
