While many displaced foreign refugees, mainly from Zimbabwe and Malawi, begin the journey back home, Durban's refugee relief service is pressing ahead with a massive anti-xenophobia campaign.
The campaign includes the launch of an orange ribbon campaign to signify anti-racism and cultural diversity.
The event will take place at the Durban City Hall from 9.00am to noon next Friday.
Durban Refugee Service Providers Network (DRSPN) spokesman Yasmin Rajah says the event coincides with World Refugee Day (WRD) and has the support of more than 11 organisations in the city.
It is also being supported by the eThekwini municipality.
Hundreds of refugees will take part. Rajah says June 20 was unanimously adopted as World Refugee Day in the UN General Assembly in 2000.
"In the light of the recent turmoil caused by attacks on and intimidation of foreign nationals, the DRSPN felt that it would be appropriate to launch a comprehensive campaign to deal with the xenophobia," Rajah says.
She says commemorating World Refugee Day is particularly important since the global theme for this year is "Protection".
