Soweto police yesterday arrested a man after recovering six stolen luxury vehicles as they were about to be driven to Botswana.

Moroka police spokesman Captain Mpande Khoza said an informant tipped them off about the stolen vehicles that were to be "shipped" to Botswana through the Ramatlabama border gate in North West.

"We had a measure of luck in recovering the cars because the suspect was arrested minutes before he crossed the border into Botswana from Mafikeng," Khoza said.

"We believe he is part of a large car theft syndicate. We hope to make more arrests."

Khoza said the cars, three BMW M3s, a Ford Ranger bakkie, an Opel Corsa bakkie and a Toyota Cruiser bakkie, were said to have been stolen in Ekurhuleni.

A V6 engine and two BMW M3 engines were also recovered.

The man is expected to appear in the Protea magistrate's court tomorrow.
