Divas in Concert for Durbs

Gugu Sibiya

The second annual Divas in Concert, which aims to showcase the skills of the sisters, is to be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC on June 14 from 6.30pm.

Promising to be fun-filled and vibrant, the highly punted show will unleash Siphokazi, Lira and Swazi Dlamini.

Siphokazi, who was raised by her grandmother, boasts an angelic voice that complements her shy demeanour beautifully. A late starter, she has already performed in almost all the concerts that matter, not to mention walking away with a number of awards at the Samas last year.

Dlamini's fine, sweet voice first came to public attention through the Joyous Celebration stage. She then went on to sing with queens of jazz like Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman and Judith Sephuma, among others. Jazz lovers will always remember her for the amazing rendition of Many Rivers To Cross and Don't Let The Sun Go Down.

She first came to the fore as a 999 artist, and like all Arthur Mafokate's proteges, she has continued blossoming even as a solo artist.

That she recently scooped two Sama awards gives hope for a brilliant music future.

So without a doubt, Durbanites are in for a good treat this weekend. Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to AGAPE, a non-profit organisation dedicated to caring for orphaned children affected and infected with HIV-Aids.

AGAPE children will be singing at the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation Concert on June 26 in London.

School Talk, the organisers of the event, will donate paint to 20 KwaZulu-Natal rural schools.

The publication is among the very first black-owned independent publications in the country established during the difficult times of apartheid.

The publication has grown so much that it is now given out free to schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga.

It is also involved in assisting underprivileged pupils with educational support and bursaries.

Tickets are available at Computicket at R100, R150 and R250 for VIPs.
