Nombulelo Mkenku, a sprinter, and Enoch Manyandi are among the local athletes who are expected to shine at the Southern Region Junior Championships in Harare, Zimbabwe, tomorrow and on Sunday.

Mkenku, who is also in Athletics South Africa (ASA's) senior team, carries the hopes of the country in the 100m and 200m events, while Manyandi should get a medal in the 5000m.

The championships will also offer African junior athletes a last chance to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships billed for Bydgoszcz, Poland, from July 8 to 13.

Other South Africa athletes who are likely to fare well in Harare include Patrick Vosloo (200m, 4x100m), Dumisane Hlaselo (1 500m), Windy Jonas (1500m), Amukelani Baloyi (3000m steeplechase) and Claudia Viljoen (100m hurdles).

"We have received positive feedback from the organisers in Zimbabwe and they have assured us that the preparations for the championships are on track," said Leonard Chuene, ASA president.

"ASA is excited at the opportunity created for our future stars who have the ability to represent the country in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

"We are very confident that our athletes will do well at these championships. All of them are motivated by the prospect of making the final team to the World Junior Championships in Poland."
