Fourteen years into democracy our country is still wrestling with numerous problems, trying to undo the harm done by apartheid.
One of the biggest challenges is to affirm our indigenous languages.
Many lofty plans have been hatched, yet English continues to dominate - to the detriment of the 10 other official languages.
What are we to do?
We could start by listening. Music, especially the crop of young hip-hop and rap artists, might well be the answer.
Not only are they eloquent in their command of Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, isiNdebele and Siswati but they also have mass appeal among the youth.
We all know how difficult it is to get through to our kids who reject anything they consider to be uncool.
But these musicians succeed in making it cool to wax lyrical in our mother-tongues.
