IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi and party chairman Zanele Magwaza-Msibi yesterday warned 900 councillors that their heads would roll if they failed to deliver or refused to take party orders in the run-up to elections next year.

Speaking at a special meeting in Ulundi, where councillors signed a pledge of support , Buthelezi pleaded with them to make sure that the IFP won the elections next year and regained control of KwaZulu-Natal .

The IFP leadership also vowed to "root out" all "rotten potatoes" within the party as they undermined the public's confidence in it.

Buthelezi said when party councillors failed to deliver then he too stood "accused".

"There are extravagant mayors who used limited council funds to purchase flashy cars," he said.

He said when these elements of incompetence occurred the party leadership suffered.

He said they were "blamed for appointing incompetent people".

"Please do not let the party down," Buthelezi said.

Magwaza-Msibi warned that if councillors did not follow party orders they would face the axe.

"We have a countdown to election day. We need to work towards achieving in each municipality. There is less than one year to fly the IFP flag in new territories throughout South Africa," she said.

She reiterated the IFP accusation that MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu had robbed the IFP of their municipalities.
