Metro FM DJs have not been paid their salaries for two months.
And they have been suffering in silence - until yesterday when one of them spoke on condition of anonymity.
The SABC has since admitted failing to pay them. Staff in other departments have apparently also not been paid, including the sports department - but no one was willing to confirm that.
"It was through no fault of ours. We had problems with our system. There was a system error," SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said.
He said, however, that staff would be paid on Friday.
Two deejays, who also did not want their names mentioned, confirmed their plight when told that one of them had let the cat out of the bag and that Kganyago had spoken on the issue.
"It has been bad. We have taken several trips to the ATMs to no avail. People were beginning to be disillusioned but still decided they would suffer in silence," one DJ said.
He added that the mood had been solemn as many people were thinking about how they were going to pay their bills.
Another deejay said that at the end of April he was shocked when his withdrawal was declined.
"I received calls from my colleagues who also told me that they had experienced the same problem. When we spoke to the management about it, they told us that there was a system error that declared some people's contracts invalid. They promised they would solve the problem 'within a day or two'."
Another deejay said she did not know what would have happened if she did not have extra jobs. "I know a single mother who depends on this salary who is at the risk of being homeless because she has not been able to pay her rent last month. Why is SABC doing this to us?"
SABC workers were called to a meeting yesterday and told that their salaries would be paid on Friday.
Kganyago confirmed that the salaries of the employees had not been paid for two months.
"Yes, there have been some problems but they have been sorted out.
"Everyone will be paid on Friday. There were system problems ever since the new contracts were made."
