ANC leaders and parents of pupils of Roselands Primary School, at Newlands in Durban, will meet today in a last-ditch effort to dissuade the school's governing body (SGB) from going to court.
The SGB wants to go to court to demand the reinstallation of CCTV cameras in the classrooms.
But the SGB is holding out on the court battle pending the outcome of today's meeting.
The cameras were removed after a directive from the department of education two weeks ago.
Learning at the school was severely disrupted for over a month after teachers downed chalk, protesting against the installation of the cameras.
Senior officials of the department visited the school and ordered that the cameras be removed.
Newlands East ANC branch chairman Sipho Nkosi said they would meet the parents to sort out the conflict.
He also appealed to the education department to urgently investigate the situation.
Nkosi said problems at the school dated back to 2003.
He said the problems included personal conflicts between staff, especially members of Sadtu and principal S'thembiso Lushozi.
Yesterday, parents reiterated their support for the SGB's decision to reinstal the cameras, saying it was for the security of their children and the staff.
SGB chairman Lindinkosi Ntombela said they had agreed to meet local leaders to settle the matter out of court.
"We are determined to see cameras reinstalled for the safety of our children," he said.
A decision to proceed with the court application would be determined by the outcome of the meeting, Ntombela said.
