Two teachers have been suspended from a high school in Mpumalanga after the education department established that they had sexual relationships with their pupils.
The teachers from the Soshangana Secondary School in Buyisonto village near Thulamahashe were suspended with full pay pending an investigation.
Their suspension follows a Sowetan expose. which revealed that more than 10 teachers at the school were allegedly involved in sexual relationships with female pupils, some as young as 15.
"The department has suspended two teachers and a formal investigation will follow," Mpumalanga education department spokesman Jasper Zwane said yesterday.
A former teacher, Elone Sibuyi, was shot dead minutes after he robbed a Thulamahashe petrol station of about R5000 last year.
Ben Mkhabela, the deputy director for labour relations in the education department, will lead the investigation. Sources close to the school said that one of the suspended teachers had allegedly impregnated a pupil and paid for her abortion.
The other was said to be involved with a 15-year-old pupil. One of the teachers allegedly supplied groceries to the 15-year-old girl's family.
The suspension comes shortly after pupils at Sitintile High School in KaNyamazane, outside Nelspruit, allegedly recorded each other's bonking sessions and distributed the video to a number of cellphones.
It also comes after a pupil from Lambalati High School in the Mbhuzini area wrote a letter to the provincial education department saying 34 girls were pregnant at the school and some of them by the teachers.
Given Nziyane was expelled from Frank Maginyana High School in Ludlow after the department found him guilty of fathering a child with a 16-year-old pupil last year.
Nziyane, who allegedly kept a mattress in the staff room for sex romps, shocked the girl's father when he admitted to having sex with her but denied he was responsible for the girl's pregnancy because he always used condoms.
He still faces a charge of statutory rape in the Mhala magistrate's court in Thulamahashe for having sex with an underage girl.
