Department taken to task

Kingdom Mabuza

A Department of Labour employee, who was dumped after being on contract for three years, has approached the Public Service Bargaining Council to contest his dismissal.

The dispute between Mluleki Mntungwa and the department will be heard in Pretoria today.

Mntungwa, who was responsible for editing the internal newsletter, complained to the council that "after serving the department for three years, they have created a reasonable expectation that I'm eligible to secure a full-time employment".

His contract had been renewed five times in the last three years until March this year.

"I was appointed as an editor of the staff Communique by the Department of Labour on February 1 2005 on a three-month contract.

"When my contract expired at the end of April it was renewed for six months," he said. "It was extended yearly until the end of March 2008.

"I was not given any reasons for my contract not being extended."
