Stanley Mabona, 21, will spend 18 years in prison for raping a 14-year-old American girl just two days after she arrived in South Africa.

The girl, now 15, was in the country on a church exchange programme when Mabona robbed and raped her while threatening her with a toy gun in Pimville, Soweto, last year.

The girl and four friends were returning from a party when Mabona and an accomplice, who later turned state's witness, threatened them with a gun.

They robbed the girls of their cellphones and kidnapped the American girl.

In her testimony the girl said she told Mabona she was 14 years old and a virgin but he raped her anyway.

In the Johannesburg high court on Friday Judge George Maluleke sentenced Mabona to 18 years for rape, 10 years for robbery, four years for kidnapping and three years for possession and pointing of an object that resembles a firearm.

The terms will run concurrently
