KHARTOUM - A Ugandan officer with the international peacekeeping forces in Sudan's Darfur region has been found shot dead in his car, a spokesman for the UNAmid force said yesterday.

The spokesman said the peacekeeper's body was found near a market in El Fasher, and an investigation was under way.

"We are peacekeepers. We are not here to participate in the conflict. It is a shock to receive news of what happened," said Noureddine Mezni, adding the officer was a police adviser with the UN-AU Mission in Darfur (UNAmid).

Mezni said the Ugandan was the first peacekeeper to be killed in Darfur. - Reuters
