A 28-year-old father appeared briefly in the GaRankuwa magistrate's court yesterday in connection with the death of his six-month-old baby boy.
Police say the boy died after he had been beaten seriously.
The incident allegedly happened in Block X, Mabopane, Pretoria, on Tuesday.
The mother of the baby laid charges at the local police station after her live-in boyfriend had allegedly slapped, punched and then strangled the toddler.
Phumzile Phokoane, pictured , said her boyfriend beat up the child because he (baby) kept falling when he tried to make him sit, the police said.
The boy's father, Judas Mampane, will appear in court again on June 6 for a bail application.
Phokoane, 21, of Moteti in Limpopo, said it was not the first time that Mampane had assaulted the baby. She said her boyfriend started beating the boy two months ago.
Mabopane police station spokesman Inspector Dikatso Thebe said Phokoane did not mention in her statement that the baby had been assaulted previously.
"According to her, the suspect wanted to sleep because he had worked night shift but the baby kept on crying, and he slapped him. She said he then punched, kicked and threw the baby on the floor before strangling him," said Inspector Thebe.
