The Gauteng provincial government is using the Euro 2008 Cup to encourage South Africans to build a love for soccer ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

The Gauteng provincial government is using the Euro 2008 Cup to encourage South Africans to build a love for soccer ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

The project is initiated by the department of sports, arts, culture and recreation in partnership with the embassies of Austria and Switzerland.

The details of the project were announced at a media briefing at Safa House yesterday.

Barbara Creecy, Gauteng MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation, said the project will see the communities watch the Euro Cup at public viewing sites.

Switzerland and Austria are the co-hosts of the Euro Cup from June 7 to 29.

As an added bonus, the overall winners will qualify for the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Creecy said they will establish public viewing sites in taverns in Leondale, Sebokeng, Bronkhorstspruit, Tsakane, Atteridgeville, Pimville, Tembisa and Westbury.

The finals will be watched in Newtown, Johannesburg.
