The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) in Limpopo has demanded that police management stop turning a blind eye to a white policeman accused of racism and abusing his authority.

He is based at Vaalwater.

A Johannesburg businessman has laid a charge of assault against him.

He was allegedly assaulted by the constable on Saturday while driving in the area.

Obvious Selawe, 39, was driving to Botswana when he noticed a car behind him. The driver flashed his lights to stop him but he didn't because inside the car was a man in private clothes and a woman.

The car overtook him and stopped in front of his car. The driver hurled insults at him and punched him. He tried to report the case to the police but was met with reluctance.

Popcru shop steward Hannes Mashilo said the constable was known for his attitude towards black people.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said yesterday the case against the white constable (whose name is known), based at Vaalwater police station, had been forwarded to the director for public prosecutions for a decision.
