Political differences in Limpopo were given a new twist when the ANC Youth League threw a party to counter a top-level provincial event to mark Africa Day celebrations at the weekend.

The event, held at GaMarishane village in the Sekhukhune region, was addressed by Premier Sello Moloto, who is also provincial chairman of the ANC.

At the centre of the row is the decision of the youth league to organise their own event in Seshego. According to protocol no politically sponsored event should take place while a provincial one is being held.

The hosting of the event at Seshego was seen as part of a defiance campaign by those opposed to Moloto's leadership.

The ANCYL has called on Moloto to step down both as ANC chairman and as premier.

ANCYL provincial chairman Lehlogonolo Masoga said yesterday the event in Seshego was held to sympathise with foreign nationals recently attacked in various parts of the country.

"At no stage had we aimed at destabilising the event in GaMarishane," Masoga said.
