A weekend spent in grand style

When I was invited to the D'oreale Grande Hotel at Emperors Palace for a weekend retreat, I lightly dismissed it as one of those dull hotels next to the airport.

Little did I know that the five-star hotel bustled with life and vitality. In fact, it is pushy in a good way, businesslike and yet up for some fun.

I was surprised to hear many languages and to see the most elegantly dressed people from all corners of the world at work and play.

Perfectly placed for either business or leisure visits, the hotel is a beautiful sight to behold.

It is richly endowed with ornamentation such as exquisite hand-painted murals and frescos, marble floors, plush carpets, furnishings and intricate mosaics, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

With various bars, restaurants, facilities and shops to visit our weekend was one of activity.

Emperors Palace is the essence of cordiality, from the gaming floors to the dining places. Warmth awaited us when my sister and I arrived at the hotel on a Saturday. The prompt service and friendliness left us feeling like goddesses.

We were hungry, so we were pleased to be shown to our table at the Tribes African Grill Restaurant by cheerful staff. The service at the restaurant is world class.

The waiters attended to your every whim, so the fresh bread, good olive oil and Balsamic vinegar dip arrived quickly.

Dinner time was another jolly event at the Queen of the Nile restaurant, a stunning Egyptian restaurant located off the main casino floor, where we were treated to a buffet featuring more than 120 dishes from around the world.

We later retreated to Marc Anthony's for drinks and then made our way to the Odeon Showbar for Simply Irresistible, a glitzy show.

After a long day of levity we went straight to our room. There is nothing as relaxing as a clean and classically decorated room that is fully air-conditioned and has a beautiful view.

Early in the morning we were treated to a delicious buffet breakfast in Aurelia's restaurant, an exquisite, fine dining style restaurant extending along the northern façade of the hotel.
