The first Gauteng Theatre and Dance Indaba will be held on June 7 to help fast forward transformation in the dance and theatre sector.
The event, expected to be launched in all nine provinces, hopes to expand the dance and theatre industry.
The Gauteng launch of Indaba will take place at Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg, over two days on June 7 and 8.
The chairman will be jazz musician Sibongile Khumalo, who is also chairman of the national arts festival committee.
Khumalo and her panel will investigate the issues of transformation, networking, local market development, compliance and human resource development at length.
The provincial indabas are part of the consultation process-research project aimed at taking stock of the sector.
Mpho Molepo, the executive secretary of the Southern African Theatre Initiative, says the project is a direct response to a number of interventions by the government through the development of community arts centres regarding infrastructure.
Molepo says: "The process of transformation and growth in the sector has moved at a snail's pace, with a number of issues still needing to be addressed to make sure that these disciplines are sustainable.
"This research project is aimed at providing a platform for all stakeholders, theatre and dance practitioners to review achievements and challenges faced by practitioners," he says.
The Gauteng indaba will be followed by extensive research in the provinces as well as at their indabas in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, North West, Northern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
