Dream deferred

When the majority of South Africans went to the polls to vote for the demise of apartheid in 1994, they also voted for a government that was going to relieve them of years of oppression and poverty.

When the majority of South Africans went to the polls to vote for the demise of apartheid in 1994, they also voted for a government that was going to relieve them of years of oppression and poverty.

But alas.

Thousands of people are still unemployed, food prices are rocketing almost every month, interest rates are soaring and school fees are unaffordable.

Many have yet to taste the fruits of freedom.

A report released by the SA Human Rights Commission last week says that more people across all race groups are living in relative poverty.

This is unacceptable.

The government should hold an urgent bosberaad to look into the shocking statistics and resolve the crisis.
