The Limpopo community policing forum yesterday discovered 26 cows which had been stolen in Mpumalanga.

Most of the cattle were reported missing as far back as last year and police have appealed to victims of stock theft in the area to come and identify their cattle.

The discovery comes a week after police arrested a 48-year-old man suspected to be the mastermind in stealing cattle in Mpumalanga and selling them to a Limpopo farmer.

Police said it is difficult to identify the cattle because the would-be thieves had tampered with the brand marks on some of them.

The value of the cattle has been estimated at R100000.

Solomon Kgopane, a community leader, said the arrest and discovery of the cattle was as a result of their community patrol that began earlier this year and which involved the police.

He said all the recovered cattle were kept at the tribal office in Marapyane.
