Pimville Primary School will celebrate its centenary in November. Mama Angel was at the school to hand over toys and other goods to be sold at a bazaar to raise funds.
Principal Mavis Mohoto said the school needs to be renovated before the big party.
"We do not have a library, just a room meant for that purpose. We want to improve the physical structure and provide more learning materials," she said.
The school has 334 pupils in Grades R to 7 and nine teachers. The children are from Freedom Park, Devland, Kliptown, Slovo Park and Motsoaledi squatter settlements. Most of the pupils live in child-headed households. The children are either infected or affected by HIV-Aids.
"Our pass rate was about 70percent but it has improved to about 90percent since we started handing out food parcels," said Dipuo Madiba who is on the centenary fund-raising task team.
The Union of Jewish Women gives the school provisions once a month for about 100 children.
The school has been plagued by burglars and vandals in the past four months. It has lost all its computers and printers, television sets and taps.
"These gifts from Sowetan will be sold at the bazaar. The blankets will be raffled to raise money," said Mohoto.
"We appreciate what Sowetan has done for our school. We bask in the love that you show to our community and hope that we will work together to make the centenary a success.
"We invite others who are celebrating this year to join us to make the occasion a success."
